Arctic Monkeys @ Riviera
May 23rd, 2007I had the good fortune to see the Arctic Monkeys and Be Your Own Pet recently with my friend Brandon. This was my fourth time seeing Be Your Own Pet, and they never disappoint. They also played some new material – which was nice since they can pretty much play their whole catalog in about 25 minutes. I think Jemina should have paced herself though, because she was visibly winded halfway through the set. As a result, she was unable to sing “Let’s Get Sandy” with the full force and fury that she delivered it at Coachella last year.
I was a little surprised at how much I enjoyed the Arctic Monkeys set. I’ve enjoyed their albums, but would never say they were a favorite of mine – but this was an excellent performance and I was totally sucked in by it. It also helped that nearly every song was a rocker, with only a few mellow tunes in the bunch. They just went full on through the entire set, and the sold out crowd went nuts for them.
After the show Brandon showed me how to use the paddle shifters in the Mini Cooper and we sort of half raced down Lakeshore Drive. I got a kick out of driving the Mini “pseudo-manual”, and rode home with the windows down and the stereo blaring the new Nine Inch Nails album. Best of all, it was a pretty early show and I made it home by before eleven – a rarity on a school night.
