Arcade Fire @ Chicago Theater
May 23rd, 2007I’m going to have to edit my top ten list of concerts, because this show certainly qualifies. Their setup looked like an old church revival, with a pipe organ in the back an round neon bible animations all around the stage. They kicked off their set with “Black Mirror” and then played a few of my least favorite songs from the album. But now that they had those out of the way, they proceeded to play everything I came to hear including “Intervention”, “My Body is a Cage”, “Ocean of Noise”, “Neon Bible”, “Windowstill” and many tracks from their first album as well.
I was particularly pleased to see them and enjoy this show as much as I did, because when I saw them last year I was distracted with some personal drama that kept me from really experiencing the show. I remember thinking at the show that it was an incredible performance, but I just couldn’t enjoy it. As I recall, I was so upset I nearly skipped the show entirely.
What a difference a year makes. This has been an excellent year so far, and more important than the external events in my life, I have been able to make a lot of internal changes too: how I internalize events and most important of all – how to keep my various insecurities from running my life.
But enough about me: this is supposed to be an Arcade Fire show review. This was my fourth time seeing the Arcade Fire, and they just keep getting better. And there isn’t a better place to see a big show in Chicago than the Chicago Theater. It has all the ambiance and charm of the Auditorium Theater, but still feels like a reasonably small venue. I’ve enjoyed every show I’ve seen there (Oasis, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Coldplay) and would see another in a minute.
