Catching Up With…

November 1st, 2006

There is a moment in everyone’s live where they are simultaneously busy professionally and completely lethargic personally. And that’s where I’ve been for the last month. Not unhappy mind you, but perfectly content to be unproductive outside of working hours. Call it regrouping. Call it preparing to hibernate for the winter. But I did see a few shows…

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Vic

I think I’ve overdone it on CYHSY this past year. This is the fourth time I’ve seen them in approximately twelve month – two shows were great and two I could have safely passed on. They put on a great performance, but their sound doesn’t translate well to bigger venues. With the bigger backdrop and more elaborate lighting, it served to make their performance look smaller instead of bigger. One truly exceptional thing about this show though was just how energetic and purely awful Architecture in Helsinki was as an opener. As my friend Stu put it “they shouldn’t be this happy about making music this bad.”

Adem/Juana Molina @ Lakeshore Theatre

My mom and I went to this. This was a great performance by both Adem and Juana Molina at what is now my favorite venue in Chicago. The Lakeshore Theatre is an intimate seated music venue converted from a small movie theatre. Adem put on a great opening solo set including a song by the Beach Boys. He really is a pleasure to see live and I’m looking forward to seeing him again in the spring when he returns with a full band. Juana Molina put on a great show too, but since the show was supposed to start at 10pm and ended up starting a lot closer to 11pm, we had pretty much turned into pumpkins at that point and were ready to head out.
