Wolf Parade @ Metro
August 8th, 2006Jim and I had a few drinks at Goose Island before the show, and ended up missing the first opening band, Frog Eyes. But we got there in time to catch, Holy Fuck, the second opener. To be perfectly honest, with a name like Holy Fuck, I wasn’t expecting much from the band. After all, their name isn’t particularly clever, and it was reasonable to assume their music would be more of the same. However, they put on a decent set of instrumental music comprised of live drums, bass, and heavy electronics.
When they concluded, Wolf Parade put on a solid performance of songs from their album “Apologies to the Queen Mary” as well as a few new songs that featured acoustic guitar. I thought they put on a performance just as good as their Coachella set earlier this year, however the mix at the Metro suffered from random miscellaneous buzzing and other noises. I particularly enjoyed the live performances of “You Are A Runner And I Am My Father’s Son” and “Fancy Claps”. During “Fancy Claps” the crowd went crazy – a wild frothing sea of arms and hips. I even managed to move a little, and I typically look like a wooden Indian at shows.
If my memory serves me correctly, they finished their encore with an extremely drawn out performance of “Dinner Bells”. Good choice to close with, because while I enjoyed the show immensely, I was completely ready for them to be done by the end of the lumbering song.
