Hiya.

My name is Tony Ballinger, and I'm a web designer living in Oak Park, Illinois.
When I'm not designing for the web, I enjoy music, go to concerts and play with gadgets.

Lo-fi Jazz, Jazz Hop, Jazztronica, or whatever…

April 7th, 2006

I’m not sure what the kids are calling it, but I’m really enjoying the whole style of jazz/hiphop/electronica put out by artists like Skalpel, Herbaliser, Bonobo, Cinematic Orchestra, Blockhead, and Quantic Soul Orchestra. And it looks like I’ll be getting into “Polish Jazz” soon, since it’s the inspiration and source for sampling material in most of Skalpel’s tracks. I’ve already started downloading free mp3′s from the Polish Jazz Network.

It’s about time I was into something new. I listen to a lot of kinds of music, but I typically fall into one genre for a while. In junior high it was punk. High school and college was mostly alternative rock and industrial. Right out of college I listened to a lot of brazillian and afro-cuban music. A few years ago it was ambient, then IDM, then laprock, then folktronica. Beginning around summer of last year I started to get into indie rock and britpop, and now jazz hop.

As genres continue to merge and merge again, music just gets more and more interesting.
