Opera Mini with a ROKR E1 on T-MobileWeb

March 12th, 2006
  1. First, you’re going to need to subscribe to the T-MobileWeb – it’s $5.99 a month. You can log into your account at www.tmobile.com to add the service. It takes about 24 hours for it to fully kick in, so be patient.
  2. Next up, your ROKR phone is going to need some settings to get it onto T-MobileWeb. Go to the Automatic Configuration Tool and select “Motorola” and then “E398″ to have the settings sent to your phone.
  3. After steps 1 and 2, you should now be able to access the Internet with the crappy Motorola browser on your ROKR. Go into WebAccess on your phone and launch Browser.
  4. Point the Motorola browser to http://mini.opera.com/ and click on Download Opera Mini. Answer ‘Yes’ to all installation messages to install it. Opera Mini will be installed in “Games and Apps” on your phone.
  5. Now for the exciting stuff – we need to change the settings your phone uses to connect to the Internet to get Opera Mini to work. Create a new WebSessions profile, make it the default, and use the following settings:
    • Service Type 1: WAP
    • Gateway IP 1: 216.155.165.50
    • Port 1: 901
    • Service Type 2: HTTP
    • Gateway IP 2: 216.155.165.50
    • Port 2: 8080
    • DNS 1: 000.000.000.000
    • DNS 2: 000.000.000.000
    • GPRS APN: wap.voicestream.com
  6. Now, Opera Mini should work just fine. Go under “Games and Apps” to launch it, and click OK when it asks if it can use the Internet connection.
  7. While Opera Mini will work with a whole lot of web sites, you’ll have a better experience with sites that were designed for mobile users. Here’s a few I like to use:
    • http://wap.oa.yahoo.com – Check your Yahoo! Mail, search for local businesses, play a few lame games, get news headlines, sports scores (bleah), check weather, get movie times and driving directions.
    • http://wap.oa.yahoo.com/raw?dp=yp – Yahoo Yellow Pages, including a browsable listing of local businesses. You can also get driving directions.
    • http://www.google.com/xhtml – Check your Gmail, search the mobile web, search for local businesses, search for images.
    • http://mobile.google.com/local – Quick and easy search for local businesses. Plus, you can get driving directions – and tiny maps that are really too small to be useful.
