Nine Inch Nails @ Allstate Arena
October 10th, 2005I must be feeling a bit more comfortable with all the changes that have happened recently, because I really enjoyed this show. I’ve been a NIN fan for a long time now, and I thought they were finished after “The Fragile”. But like I said after their performance at Coachella this year, NIN is most certainly back. The new album is good, and their tour feels more fresh than it did last time around.
The setlist for the evening felt light on the new material, but I suppose they did play “The Hand That Feeds”, “Only”, “Getting Smaller”, Beside You In Time” and “Right Where It Belongs”. Which is a shame really, because my favorite songs are “You Know Who You Are”, “Every Day is Exactly The Same”, “With Teeth”, and “Sunspots” – a few of which they played at Coachella.
In particular, “Right Where It Belongs” was powerful live. The song got a similar treatment to “Hurt” years ago, with full-stage video projections over the understated tune. It was very dramatic, and I listen to that song on the album with a new fondness.
Another high point of the evening was Autolux’s opening set. That makes my third time seeing Autolux this year, and I’m not getting tired of them yet. I could have done with shorter noisy segways between songs ala Sonic Youth, but it’s forgivable. I’m looking forward to a followup album to their debut “Future Perfect”.
