Nouvelle Vague @ Schubas

September 19th, 2005

I’ll admit – I had a moment of doubt on the way to the club for this show. While I love their debut CD of alternative classics reworked into bossa nova numbers – I doubted their ability to pull it off live without it being gimmicky. My doubts were totally unfounded – they put on an incredible show. They played most the songs from the album, and a few faired better live, like Depeche Mode’s “I Just Can’t Get Enough”. They also did a few songs that weren’t on the album, llke Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”. There were two lead singers – a sexy, feminine woman woman with a breathy voice, and a tall, spooky woman with a deep, blusey voice. Where the first’s performance was subtle and understanded, the latter’s perfomance was intense, and she worked the crowd into a frenzy. By the end of their first number, all my doubts about the evening’s show had been dashed, and I just stood back and enjoyed myself.
