Bloc Party @ Metro

April 1st, 2005

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen an audience as excited about a band as they were for Bloc Party. The band was spot-on, they were excited to be playing, and the crowd reciprocated every bit of that energy. You can pretty much sum up Bloc Party as the following:

  • 40% – Early U2
  • 40% – The Clash
  • 20% – Coldplay’s last album

That’s a pretty solid formula for rocking out. And while that formula might not typically float my boat, the lead singer’s English accent makes it a bit more interesting for me. Their debut "Silent Alarm" is a solid album, and my friend Stu insists they’re going to be the next big thing. From this performance, I solidly agree.

The Ponys opened. I’ve seen them once before, opening for Blues Explosion. For some reason, I liked them a lot better the previous time. This evening, the lead singer’s voice was bugging me a bit. But it was still a solid performance by a good band. Their local following is well deserved.
