22-20s @ Empty Bottle

March 28th, 2005

Actually, the 22-20s were the second act of the evening. The Golden Republic opened, followed by the 22-20s, and then Grahm Coxon. But I was there to see the 22-20s, and they rocked out.

If you haven’t heard the 22-20s, you can approximate their sound by taking 3 parts “The Black Keys” and mixing with 1 part of “Black Rebel Motorcycle Club”. It’s basically blues/alt/rock. Their debut album is released here in the states on April 19th, featuring a US-only track "Baby, You’re Not In Love".

As for the other two acts… The Golden Republic put on a respectable (if forgettable) performance. Grahm Coxon’s set was pretty entertaining, but the novelty of his voice wears thin after about 30 minutes. My favorite song in his set started as a little ballad, and then turned into a 5-minute noisefest of furious guitar-playing.
