Reversal of Fortune

February 22nd, 2005

This day, I officially recant last month’s badmouthing of the Coachella lineup. I’m going now – tickets are bought, flights are booked, rooms are rented, and I’ve rented a convertible Mustang for the journey into the desert.

Why the sudden change of heart? Many reasons, but primarily I wasn’t that hyped up about the big acts, and I wasn’t that aware of who the small acts were. Here’s a quick summary of my thinking…

Coldplay

They’re going to be great, because they’re always great in concert. They put their all into their performances, and they’ll be playing new material.

Bauhaus

Ok, I’m not a big Bauhaus fan. I realize that’s heresy to some folks, so I’m brushing up on their albums before the show. Besides, they’re legends, plus I loved Love & Rockets. So I’m sure they’ll rock out.

Cocteau Twins

I was supposed to see them years ago at the Riviera, but they cancelled. Seeing them at Coachella will right the concert karma for that previous injustice. Also, I have a lot of their albums and would enjoy finally seeing them live.

Doves, Spoon, The Kills, British Sea Power, Stereophonics, The Futureheads, and Autolux

I didn’t know their stuff earlier, but now i do. Looking forward to all their shows a lot.

The Raveonettes

I love them. I flew to NYC for 24 hours once just to see them play at the Bowery. With that kind of thinking, flying across the country to see them play in the 104 degree heat of the desert makes perfect sense.

Nine Inch Nails

I was supremely disappointed in The Fragile as well as the tour. But I still love NIN and I’m really looking forward to both the new album and the show.

New Order

In junior high, there were three band names written on my notebooks: The Cure, Depeche Mode, and New Order. I’ve seen the other two multiple times. It’s time to see New Order finally. IMO, there are no more perfect albums than Brotherhood and Low Life.

The Arcade Fire

I didn’t think much of it at first, but Funeral is an excellent album. When I hear it, I think of The Talking Heads. And that’s a very good thing.
